Gingivitis

At our office, we pay great attention to proper oral hygiene, which we feel is a guarantee of maintaining a healthy smile for life.

Every patient, prior to any planned treatment, should have tartar and plaque removed and receive hygiene instruction so that they are aware of how to minimise plaque and tartar build-up and prevent the development of gingivitis.

Causes:

  • improper oral hygiene, which causes plaque and tartar build-up

Dental plaque is a habitat for bacteria that forms on the surface of the teeth as early as 4 to 12 hours after brushing; if plaque is not removed regularly, it becomes mineralised, i.e. hardened, and tartar forms. A tooth has five surfaces and each of these surfaces should be cleaned of plaque twice a day. During professional hygienization, the hygienist points out to the patient which surfaces require more thorough hygiene.

Periodontitis

This is a condition in which chronic inflammation has occurred and the disease involves not only the gums but also the surrounding bone, causing its gradual disappearance. At each check-up, the dentist will measure the depth of the gingival pocket to identify or rule out developing periodontitis

Causes:

  • hygienic negligence
  • genetic factors
  • general co-morbidities
  • cigarette smoking
  • malocclusion

The treatment of periodontitis is lengthy and requires perfect hygiene and great discipline on the part of the patient. Untreated, it leads to loosening of the teeth and, as a consequence, to their loss
